Spotlight: WTI Oil

2026-10-19

WTI crude oil is retreating sharply, trading at $96.81 after shedding nearly 2.5% on the session—a reversal that stands out given the above-average volume accompanying the decline. The pullback comes just days after the benchmark approached its 20-day high near $99.50, a level that has now firmly established itself as near-term resistance. Despite today’s slide, the bigger picture remains constructive: crude is still up 4.7% on the week and holds comfortably in the upper portion of its recent trading range.

The technical backdrop underscores both the strength of the rally and its vulnerability. Price sits well above the 50-day exponential moving average at $90.38 and towers over the 200-day EMA at $83.21, confirming a robust uptrend across timeframes. However, the RSI at 69.2 is only now easing back from overbought territory, and today’s rejection near $99.50 suggests buyers are exhausted at these elevated levels. Volume expanding on a down day is a classic warning sign that profit-taking may extend further before fresh demand emerges.

Traders should watch the $95.00 area as initial support, with the psychologically significant $90 mark—reinforced by the EMA50—serving as the more meaningful line in the sand for trend followers. A decisive break above $99.50 would invalidate the correction scenario and open the door toward triple digits.

For the coming days, expect choppy, headline-driven trade as supply and demand narratives compete. The base case favors a continued pullback toward $93–95, which would reset momentum and offer a healthier entry for bulls. As long as $90 holds, the broader uptrend remains intact.
