Spotlight: WTI Oil

2026-07-18

WTI crude oil has delivered the week’s most dramatic move, surging 4.5% in a single session to $82.49 and capping a stunning 15.5% weekly advance that has redrawn the technical map for energy traders. The magnitude and velocity of the rally point strongly toward a supply-side shock or geopolitical catalyst rather than gradual demand repricing, and the market is now pinned at its 20-day high with a range position of 0.98, leaving virtually no overhead congestion from recent trading.

The breakout has decisively reclaimed the 50-day exponential moving average at $81.94, which now flips to near-term support after weeks of consolidation beneath it. Immediate resistance sits at $82.76, a level bulls must clear to open a run toward the 200-day EMA at $84.98, the last major technical barrier separating this move from a full trend reversal. A sustained close above that longer-term average would confirm the structural shift from bearish to bullish territory.

The caveat is momentum: the RSI(14) has spiked to 78.3, deep into overbought conditions and at levels that historically precede either consolidation or sharp pullbacks. Event-driven rallies of this kind often overshoot before mean-reverting, and traders chasing strength here face asymmetric risk if the underlying catalyst fades.

Over the coming days, expect elevated volatility with $82.76 as the immediate pivot. A clean break higher targets $84.98, while failure at resistance likely triggers profit-taking back toward the $81.94 support zone. The path of least resistance remains upward, but position sizing should respect the stretched momentum readings. Headline risk cuts both ways from here.
