Spotlight: USD/JPY

2026-10-12

USD/JPY trades at 158.371, up 0.2% on the day and 0.4% on the week, as the pair grinds steadily toward territory that has historically set off alarm bells in Tokyo. The dollar is pressing against its 20-day high of 158.996 and currently sits in the 86th percentile of its recent trading range, leaving only a thin buffer before the psychologically charged 159-160 zone comes into play — levels that previously triggered intervention chatter from Japan’s Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Japan. The technical backdrop supports the bulls for now. Price holds comfortably above both the 50-day EMA at 158.01 and the 200-day EMA at 157.71, with the shorter average tracking above the longer one in a constructive alignment. The RSI(14) at 60.5 signals healthy upward momentum without yet flashing overbought warnings, suggesting the move retains room to extend. Fundamentally, the story remains unchanged: persistent yen weakness driven by yield differentials that continue to favor the dollar keeps the carry trade attractive, and nothing in the rate outlook has meaningfully narrowed that gap. The risk, however, is asymmetric at these altitudes. Verbal intervention from Japanese officials could arrive at any moment, and actual FX action becomes increasingly plausible should 160 come under threat. Traders should watch 158.996 as the immediate upside trigger, with 158.01 serving as first support on any pullback. Over the coming days, expect a cautious grind higher punctuated by headline sensitivity — long positions near 159 carry elevated intervention risk, and sharp, sudden reversals cannot be ruled out if Tokyo decides the line has been crossed.
