Spotlight: WTI Oil
2026-09-15
WTI crude oil has smashed through the $100 psychological barrier, closing at 100.63 on Monday after a 2.46% daily surge that caps a blistering 8.92% weekly advance. The move to a fresh 20-day high came on volume running roughly 3.5 times the daily average, the kind of participation that separates genuine breakouts from false starts. Price now sits at the very top of its recent trading range, a position that historically favors continuation when accompanied by this level of conviction.
The trend structure underneath is unambiguous. Crude trades well above its 50-day exponential moving average at 86.39 and its 200-day EMA at 80.64, with the widening gap between the two confirming accelerating bullish momentum rather than a mature, tiring trend. That said, the 14-day RSI has climbed to 83.4, deep into overbought territory and a clear warning that the rally is stretched in the short term. Overbought readings can persist during powerful momentum phases, but they raise the odds of sharp intraday shakeouts, particularly around a level as psychologically loaded as $100.
Traders should watch whether crude can hold above the century mark on any retest. A successful defense of the $100 zone would validate the breakout and open the door toward $105 and beyond, while a failure back below could trigger profit-taking down toward the mid-90s. For the next few days, the path of least resistance remains higher given the volume confirmation, but chasing at these levels carries real risk. Disciplined entries on pullbacks toward the breakout area offer the better reward-to-risk profile, with momentum firmly favoring the bulls until proven otherwise.
